Originally, a small beach side fishing village whose name actually means “the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy season” and over the years this tiny eastern seaboard town has developed into a beach resort and now the Thais even refer to it as Mueng Phatthaya which translates in English as Pattaya City.
The fact is that in modern times, Pataya remains a bustling beach resort which is renowned for its legendary nightlife. The boom started in the 50's and 60's as the US Forces working in Vietnam started docking their ships in the bay and visiting the shore for R&R (Rest and Relaxation) and from then onwards the word about the existence of this little jewel in the East started spreading.
Since then the influx of western tourists has been immense, although mainly driven due to the nightclubs, beer bars and agogos. Thai girls have always been known around the world for their tanned skin, shiny silky hair and overall beauty and this little piece of paradise by the ocean has been a perfect sea side meeting point for local women and the travellers. Not just the boom in tourism, these factors also contributed in the development of various housing projects, condominiums, villas, resorts and hotels to be built throughout this beach city, which mainly, is only about a 4 kilometre or so stretch of land, starting from Naklua (Banglamung), Dolphin Roundabout (where the road splits in four tributaries), North Pattaya, Second Road, and Pattaya Beach Road going all the way to South Pattaya and Third Road, not to forget the world famous Walking Street, Soi PattayaFunland, Soi Buakhao and LK Metropole. But no matter where you are, there is one thing in common, being the night life and fun town, you will find the bar girls throughout. There are a couple of discos as well but why would one wish to go to discotheques when your have so many good choices of bars and gogos.
Being a coastal region, seafood restaurants are plentiful and Thai Cuisine is very popular but even European, Intercontinental, Indian, Arabic and Italian Food is available in various bistros and cafes. Fast food chains are also spread out wide in the various shopping arcades such as Mike Shopping Mall, Central Pattaya Beach Shopping Centre and Royal Garden Plaza. Also available are supercenters such as BigC, Carrefour and Tesco Lotus.
Many bachelors and couples from all over the globe visit Pattaya often and have made it their second home away from home.
One can go on writing information and guide on this magical place but you have to truely visit it to believe it!
